Introverts and Family: Sister Socks!

Due to the loner personality of most (not all) introverts, family relationships are very important.

Personally, I struggle with putting up walls way too high. People have trouble breaking them down and most (sadly) give up.

I am then left with the question:

“What is wrong with me?”

When in reality (I see now), I needed to work on my own walls and be more approachable. Nevertheless, my growth now, doesn’t change the fact that I have never really been part of a friend group. Most of the time I would just say it’s just part of my personality to be on my own. It wasn’t. Everyone needs a support group, friends, and people to talk to. That is where family comes in for me.

Growing up, I had 2 brothers and 3 sisters. That may or may not seem like a lot to you, but at the time, it was a big family. Sure we had our fights, misunderstandings, and times where we “hated each others guts.” We never truly meant that of course. Looking back, I can see now it just meant that we weren’t afraid to hurt feelings, or tip-toe around arguments. We were honest with each other, even if it wasn’t always pleasant, and that made us siblings very close.

We were “Partners in Crime” and proud of it.

We did many things growing up: built forts, learned instruments, rode bikes, roller bladed, made up silly games, created exclusive clubs that required initiation, dug holes for no reason, swung on vines like Tarzan, made mud pies, and the list could go on and on (and on).

Interestingly enough, different chapters of my life has made it possible to become close with different siblings, at different times. I don’t think that I have ever been equally close with all of them simultaneously. When I shared a room with my older sister, I was closest with her then. My older brother and I used to be close in our sneaky schemes, and creative ideas, back in the day. My little sisters and I are close now because they are older, and have really become grown-up young ladies. I almost fancy myself a role model for them. I am also close with my younger brother because we are in the similar college stage of life, and we try to help each other. The inevitable distance that happens in life doesn’t change anything. We will always be there for each other when it matters.

sisters

Recently, my sisters and I bought “Sister Socks.”

This is more than just matching socks. It is a symbol of our sisterhood, and how important it is that we stick together. Relationships and friendships will come and go, but sisters are forever (brothers are too but I don’t think they would appreciate the pink striped socks). We have each others backs.

Do you have any siblings? How much do you value your family? Let me know!

  1. I agree 100%! Sisters are pretty awesome (brothers too). Like built in best friends that will never leave. It’s fun to remember everything and to continue adding to the long list of good times. 🙂

  2. Even though I do not have a sister, I do enjoy my sister-in-laws and even call them sisters. I increasingly value my brother in our adult years. He picked on me growing up, but we had become “friends” by high school! 🙂 I know he is there for me no matter what or how busy he may be. Though we may not talk often on the phone (goes in cycles), I know that he is only an email or call away. Proverbs 17:17.

I value my brother and my family and know that each member is a blessing from God!
